Why Do Some People Postpone Cosmetic Procedures During Venus Retrograde?
“Venus is in retrograde. Should I postpone my surgery?” This is a question some people ask when considering cosmetic procedures. It is not just surgery, either. Botox and dermal filler treatments are sometimes postponed until the retrograde period has ended.
Wanting to choose the right time and feel confident before making a change to your appearance is understandable. However, there is no reliable clinical evidence showing that Venus retrograde negatively affects the results of cosmetic surgery, Botox or dermal fillers.
From time to time, patients ask me whether they should postpone their surgery during a retrograde period. I respect personal beliefs. As a physician, however, my priority is to base medical decisions on scientific evidence and help ease my patients' concerns by providing accurate information.
What Is Venus Retrograde, and Why Is It Associated With Cosmetic Procedures?
Venus retrograde is an astronomical phenomenon in which Venus temporarily appears to move backwards across the sky when observed from Earth. The planet does not actually reverse its orbit. This apparent motion results from the orbital movements of Earth and Venus.
In astrology, Venus is associated with beauty, aesthetics and personal preferences. For this reason, some people prefer to avoid procedures that change their appearance during retrograde periods.
However, observing an astronomical phenomenon does not mean that it affects the body's healing processes or the outcomes of cosmetic treatments. Establishing such a relationship would require reliable scientific research.
Can You Have Cosmetic Surgery During Venus Retrograde?
People who are medically suitable for cosmetic surgery can undergo a procedure during Venus retrograde. There is no scientific reason to postpone surgery solely because it falls within a retrograde period.
For procedures such as rhinoplasty, facelift surgery, blepharoplasty, tummy tuck surgery or breast surgery, the important considerations are the patient's overall health, current medications, surgical planning, anaesthesia assessment and postoperative care arrangements.
Claims that Venus or Mercury retrograde increases bleeding risk, delays wound healing or negatively affects cosmetic results have not been scientifically established.
For years, I have scheduled my surgeries according to my patients' health and the requirements of their procedures, without taking retrograde periods into account. In my own clinical experience, I have not encountered a problem that I could associate with these periods. However, I want to emphasise that personal clinical observations alone do not constitute scientific evidence.
Every surgical procedure carries its own risks. Therefore, the timing of surgery should be determined according to individual health considerations and medical requirements rather than an astrological calendar.
Can You Get Botox During Venus Retrograde?
Botox treatments are also sometimes postponed because of Venus retrograde. Some people worry that Botox may be less effective during this period, that their facial expression may look different from what they expected or that they may be dissatisfied with the result.
However, there is no reliable clinical evidence showing that Venus retrograde reduces the effectiveness of Botox, changes how long its effects last or increases the risk of complications.
The main factors influencing Botox results include the individual's muscle anatomy, the treatment area, the product used, the dosage and the injection technique. The time it takes for the effects to develop may also vary between individuals.
Nevertheless, Botox is not a risk-free treatment that is suitable in every situation. An active infection at the injection site, known hypersensitivity to the product or certain medical conditions may require treatment to be postponed or may make it unsuitable.
Therefore, when scheduling a Botox appointment, the primary considerations should be medical suitability and safe treatment conditions, not the retrograde period.
Can You Get Dermal Fillers During Venus Retrograde?
Some people also postpone dermal filler treatments for the lips, cheeks or jawline during Venus retrograde. This decision is often driven by concerns that the results may differ from their expectations or that they might later regret the treatment.
However, there is no reliable scientific evidence showing that Venus retrograde reduces filler longevity, negatively affects treatment outcomes or increases the risk of complications.
In dermal filler treatments, the material used, the anatomy of the treatment area, the individual's facial structure and the injection technique are important. Temporary swelling, bruising or tenderness may occur after treatment. Although rare, serious complications such as vascular occlusion can also occur.
Filler treatment may need to be postponed if there is an active infection in the treatment area or if the individual's health makes the procedure unsuitable.
For this reason, the treatment area, filler material, potential risks and personal expectations should be evaluated before proceeding. The most appropriate time for treatment should be determined by medical suitability rather than the calendar alone.
Have Scientists Studied the Effects of Astrological Periods on Surgical Outcomes?
There is a lack of robust clinical research directly investigating whether Venus retrograde affects the outcomes of cosmetic surgery, Botox or dermal fillers. However, some scientific studies have examined possible relationships between lunar phases, zodiac signs and surgical outcomes.
These studies are relevant because they use scientific data to investigate proposed associations between astrological periods and surgical results.
A 2017 Study Examined 16,965 Cataract Surgeries
A study published in the Journal of Ophthalmology in 2017 examined 16,965 cataract surgeries. Researchers investigated whether lunar phases and the Moon's position in zodiac signs were associated with complications during surgery.
After the necessary statistical adjustments, the study found no significant differences in complication rates associated with these variables.
Study: Faschinger et al., 2017 — The Influence of Lunar Phases on Complications in Cataract Surgery: An Analysis of 16,965 Patients (DOI: 10.1155/2017/1946527)
A 2011 Study Reviewed Surgical Records From 27,914 Patients
Another study published in the World Journal of Surgery examined surgical records from 27,914 patients. Researchers investigated possible associations between lunar phases, zodiac signs, certain calendar dates, intraoperative blood loss and the frequency of emergency operations.
The findings did not support the idea that the astrological and calendar-related variables examined influenced these surgical outcomes.
Study: Schuld et al., 2011 — Popular Belief Meets Surgical Reality: Impact of Lunar Phases, Friday the 13th and Zodiac Signs on Emergency Operations and Intraoperative Blood Loss (DOI: 10.1007/s00268-011-1166-8)
There is an important distinction here: These studies did not directly investigate Venus retrograde or cosmetic procedures. Therefore, it would be inaccurate to claim that they definitively prove Venus retrograde has no effect. However, current scientific evidence does not support scheduling cosmetic procedures according to astrological calendars.
When Should Cosmetic Surgery, Botox or Dermal Fillers Be Postponed?
There are circumstances in which postponing a cosmetic procedure may be medically necessary. Such decisions should be based on conditions that could affect patient safety rather than an astrological calendar.
- Cosmetic surgery: Surgery may be postponed because of an active infection, uncontrolled medical conditions, risks identified during anaesthesia assessment or incomplete preoperative investigations.
- Botox treatments: Infection at the injection site, known hypersensitivity to product ingredients and certain medical conditions may affect whether treatment is appropriate.
- Dermal filler treatments: Active skin infections, inflammatory conditions or risks associated with the product may require treatment to be postponed.
Every patient's health and needs are different. Therefore, treatment timing should be determined through an individual medical assessment.
Before surgery, it is particularly important to complete the necessary investigations, review current medications and ensure appropriate conditions for postoperative recovery.
For non-surgical treatments such as Botox and dermal fillers, a pre-treatment assessment, appropriate product selection and consideration of potential complications are also essential aspects of safe planning.
Can Anxiety About Retrograde Influence Your Decision to Have a Cosmetic Procedure?
Feeling psychologically prepared is also important before undergoing a cosmetic procedure. Surgery in particular can involve not only physical changes but also personal expectations and decisions that deserve careful consideration.
I believe it is important for my patients to feel comfortable discussing their concerns. If a patient feels anxious about undergoing a procedure during retrograde, we can talk about those concerns, address their questions and consider a date when they may feel more prepared.
My intention is not to question personal beliefs or dismiss patients' concerns. What matters is that every patient feels confident and can make an informed decision based on accurate information.
However, choosing to postpone a procedure for personal reasons is not the same as needing to postpone it for medical reasons.
Waiting until the retrograde period ends may be a personal preference. However, there is insufficient evidence to suggest that doing so makes surgery, Botox or dermal filler treatments scientifically safer.
Can You Have Cosmetic Surgery, Botox or Dermal Fillers During Venus Retrograde? In Brief
There is no reliable clinical evidence showing that Venus retrograde worsens the outcomes of cosmetic surgery, Botox or dermal fillers or increases their risks.
For cosmetic surgery, the key considerations are the patient's health, anaesthesia assessment and surgical planning. For Botox and dermal fillers, medical suitability, product selection and safe treatment practices are the main priorities.
There is no scientific justification for postponing cosmetic procedures solely because Venus is in retrograde. Nevertheless, personal concerns and psychological readiness should also be discussed openly with the treating physician. The most appropriate timing can be determined together, based on the patient's health and individual needs.
How Is the Right Time for a Cosmetic Procedure Determined?
The most appropriate timing for cosmetic surgery, Botox or dermal filler treatment is not the same for everyone. The type of procedure, overall health, personal expectations and time available for recovery should all be considered together.
People who have concerns about retrograde periods can also discuss their questions during a consultation. This provides an opportunity to learn about the procedure from a scientific perspective while considering their expectations and decision-making process.
If you would like to know whether cosmetic surgery, Botox or dermal fillers are suitable for you and when treatment may be appropriate, you can arrange a consultation.
