Will There Be Scars After Breast Surgery? What You Need to Know

When considering breast surgery to achieve the aesthetic appearance of your dreams, one of the first questions that comes to mind may be "What about the scars?" This is at the top of the issues that our patients are most curious and worried about. Especially many people considering operations such as breast reduction may hesitate to take this important step due to the concern of scarring.

So, is it inevitable to have scars after breast aesthetics surgeries with today's technology? How prominent are these scars and what can be done to minimize them? In this article, we will handle this important issue with all transparency from a plastic surgeon's point of view.

First of all, it should be noted that everywhere there is a surgical incision, a scar will definitely remain. However, our main philosophy in modern plastic surgery is to plan these scars in the least prominent way by hiding them in the natural folds of the body and to manage the recovery process in the best way.

Scars Formed According to the Type of Surgery

Every breast surgery (augmentation, reduction, or lift) serves a different purpose and different incision techniques are used to achieve this purpose. Therefore, the shape and location of the resulting scar varies according to the type of operation.

1. Scars in Breast Reduction and Breast Lift Surgeries

These two operations are performed with similar principles to recover sagging breast tissue, remove excess skin, and give the breast a more upright, aesthetic form. They usually leave a scar in the shape of an "Inverted T":

  • Around the nipple (areola),
  • A vertical line descending from the nipple to the inframammary fold,
  • A horizontal line along the inframammary fold.

Although this scar is prominent at first, it fades over time and approaches the skin color. Thanks to developing surgical techniques, these operations can also be performed in suitable patients with only a vertical scar descending from around the nipple (Lollipop/Inverted L technique).

2. Scars in Breast Augmentation Surgery and the "Scarless" Method

In breast augmentation surgery, scars are much shorter and easier to hide. For the placement of the implant, an incision is usually made from the following regions:

  • Inframammary fold (most frequently preferred)
  • Around the nipple
  • Armpit

The Method That Leaves No Scar on the Breast: Breast Augmentation via the Armpit
If it is desired to have no scar on the breast at all, the incision made from the armpit is an ideal solution. The implant is placed with an incision of approximately 4 cm made in the armpit fold line. In this way, the breast tissue is never touched and the scar heals as the natural line of the armpit, becoming almost invisible at the end of about a year.

What Are the Factors Affecting Scar Quality?

How prominent the scar will be after surgery depends not only on the surgeon's technique but also on many different factors:

  • Surgeon's Technique: Making the incision in the right place, acting sensitive to the tissue, and placing the stitches aesthetically in layers is the most important factor directly affecting the scar quality.
  • Genetic Factors: The skin structure of some people may be genetically prone to form more prominent scars (keloid, hypertrophic scar).
  • Lifestyle: Smoking disrupts tissue nutrition and blood circulation, delaying wound healing and causing more prominent scars.
  • Recovery Process: The development of infection at the wound site after surgery negatively affects the quality of the scar.

Scars and Aesthetic Satisfaction

Breast surgeries are operations that significantly increase the quality of life and self-confidence of the person. With modern surgical techniques and correct wound care, surgical scars often remain as an insignificant detail next to aesthetic gains. Remember that it may take 1-2 years for surgical scars to take their final shape and fade to the maximum level.
