Breast Implant Guide: Round or Teardrop? Everything You Need to Know
Breast augmentation surgery is one of the most effective methods for women to achieve their aesthetic goals and refresh their self-confidence. When you decide to embark on this journey, one of the most important questions you will face is undoubtedly: "Which breast implant is the right one for me?" Making the right decision among dozens of different types, shapes, and contents of implants on the market is critical for both meeting aesthetic expectations and achieving a long-lasting, natural result.
As our clinic, we consider guiding our patients through this important decision process as part of our mission. In this article, we will illuminate the world of breast implants for you and answer the most frequently asked questions.
What is a Breast Implant?
A breast implant (also known as silicone) is a medical material used in breast augmentation operations to give the breast the desired volume and shape. The outer surface of modern breast implants consists of a durable silicone shell, and the inner part consists of a non-fluid gel-like silicone that mimics body tissue. Implants produced with today's technology offer an extremely natural feel and appearance while being designed to maintain their form for many years.
Types of Breast Implants: Which One is Most Suitable for You?
Breast implants are basically classified according to three main criteria: Shape, content, and surface structure. The right implant is the combination of these three features that is most compatible with your body structure and aesthetic goals.
A. Implants According to Shape: Round vs. Teardrop
This is the distinction our patients are most curious about. Both shapes have their own advantages.
Round Implants
These symmetrical, hemispherical implants provide fullness to both the lower and upper parts of the breast. They are especially ideal for patients who desire a fuller and more striking appearance in the cleavage area. They do not carry the risk of rotation within the body and generally offer a more dynamic appearance.
Anatomical (Teardrop) Implants
As the name suggests, they have a structure that mimics the natural breast form, being fuller at the bottom and tapering towards the top. They are preferred especially in patients with very little or no breast tissue to obtain an extremely natural result that "doesn't look like surgery." They are used to preserve the natural transition and form of the breast in cases where there is little sagging.
B. Implants According to Content: Silicone Gel and Saline
What is inside the implant directly affects its feel and safety.
Silicone Gel Filled Implants
Today, they are considered the gold standard. Thanks to "cohesive" (smart) gel technology, even if the implant is cut, its content does not flow or leak. They offer the closest feel and naturalness to human breast tissue.
Saline (Salt Water) Filled Implants
The outer shell is silicone, and the inside is filled with sterile salt water during surgery. They have the advantage of being placed through smaller incisions. In case of a possible leak, the salt water inside is safely absorbed by the body and does not pose any health risk.
C. Implants According to Surface Structure: Textured and Smooth
The texture of the implant's outer shell is also an important factor.
Textured Surface
The surface of these implants is slightly rough. This structure allows the implant to adhere better to the tissue where it is placed and is frequently preferred because it reduces the risk of an undesirable hardening called "capsular contracture."
Smooth Surface
They have a softer outer surface and can be more mobile within the tissue.
Why is Correct Implant Choice Important?
There is no such thing as the "best implant"; there is the "right implant for you." This decision depends on many factors such as the width of your rib cage, the amount of existing breast tissue, the elasticity of your skin, your shoulder and hip measurements, and most importantly, your aesthetic expectations. For this reason, a detailed examination before breast augmentation surgery is vital. In this process, we use trial implants (sizers) to visualize the post-operative volume and appearance together and decide on the most ideal plan for you.
It should be remembered that non-implant methods such as fat injection are also available for breast augmentation. However, the most prominent and permanent results in volume increase are obtained with silicone implants. Sometimes, to achieve the most natural result, implant application can be combined with fat injection (Hybrid Breast Augmentation).
The variety in breast implant technology now makes it possible for every woman to achieve extremely personal and natural results specific to her own body structure and dreams. The most important step in this journey is to consult with an experienced plastic surgeon who will present these options correctly and create the most accurate plan with an aesthetic vision.
